On Assignment - Camille's Christening / by Martin Siggers

As they say, you should never work with children or animals. Yet as photographers we're asked to do the former quite a bit (and the latter occasionally as well). Christenings are an interesting experience since they combine some of the high-stakes formality of weddings with a slightly more casual vibe, and throw the added twist of extremely young children into the mix as well. Any work undertaken in a church is going to be tough, given the limited light, lack of flash use , and most importantly the requirement to be discreet. This was a very enjoyable job since aside from the ceremony itself I was also allowed to cover the preparation and the subsequent dinner reception, which let me practice a more relaxed, fly-on-the-wall style that's a welcome break from the intensity of a church shoot.
